Archive Collection - Dominique Visse

Les Arts Florissants have received a small archive collection from Dominique Visse -opera singer and countertenor- consisting of his original handwritten transcriptions produced for Les Arts Florissants during the 1980s. As a result, 23 works by Charpentier, Grandi, and Moulinié have now been added to the catalogue.

 

The distinctive feature of these autograph manuscripts is that they bear witness to a pioneering period in which transcription, musicological research, and performance practice were closely intertwined. Before the advent of digital notation tools, each score reflected a patient, painstaking craft: the movement of the pen, together with additions and corrections, reveals the successive stages of a direct engagement with the original source.

 

These documents have now entered the archive not only for their intrinsic value, but also because they illustrate the way the collection has been built over time, through works that have played an important role in the history of Les Arts Florissants.

 

Dominique Visse's manuscripts are distinguished by their instantly recognizable black-ink handwriting and by their title pages, which are often elegantly decorated and occasionally enhanced with touches of colour.

For over 40 years, Les Arts Florissants Music Resources team has carried out outstanding work in musicological research, source comparison, and the engraving of its own performance materials in support of the Ensemble's artistic programme.

 

A specialist library with archival collections is open to the public and music professionals by appointment. In addition, the Les Arts Florissants series, edited by William Christie and published by Éditions des Abbesses, offers editions of key works from the Ensemble's core repertoire.
