Geneviève de Chambure: A Pioneer of the Baroque Revival

Discover on Radio France: Geneviève de Chambure, pionnière du Baroque, a new documentary series produced for France Music by Priscille Lafitte. Through this original audio production, Lafitte traces the remarkable life of an extraordinary woman -a leading figure in the rediscovery of France's musical heritage and a decisive influence on William Christie's artistic journey.

When the young Franco-American harpsichordist arrived in France in the 1970's, he encountered the rich repertoire of seventeenth-century French music. This musical revelation was inseparable from his meeting with Geneviève de Chambure, whose support, guidance, and friendship profoundly shaped his artistic development.

A musician, musicologist, collector, and bibliophile, Countess de Chambure was far more than a generous patron of music. She played a pivotal role in the rediscovery and preservation of France's musical heritage, supporting young musicians -including William Christie- and rescuing an extraordinary number of musical instruments and Renaissance Italian music manuscripts from destruction. Following her death, her collection was acquired by the French State, significantly enriching the holdings of the Musée de la Musique.

Drawing on archival recordings, personal testimonies, and musical excerpts, Priscille Lafitte paints a portrait of a visionary woman whose commitment left a lasting mark on the history of early music in France and helped shape the beginnings of William Christie's career.

A four-part series, broadcast at 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, July 11, 18, and 25, and August 1 on Radio France, and available as a podcast on France Musique.
