International symposium: Geneviève Thibault de Chambure - treasures from her collection

Symposium co-organized by Fondation Royaumont and Fondation Les Arts Florissants - William Christie

Geneviève de Chambure

Geneviève Thibault de Chambure (1902-1975) was an outstanding figure in musicology and early music. Since her death, her multiple works have continued to nourish musicological and organological research, and her name remains attached to that of two national heritage institutions: the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée de la Musique.

Founder of the Société de Musique d'Autrefois (SMA) in 1926, she worked for decades to bring forgotten repertoires to light. She based this research on an outstanding collection of early scores, begun at the age of twenty and covering French, German and Italian vocal and instrumental music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. She added to this passion for manuscripts and music books that of early instruments, constituting the largest collection ever assembled in France in this field.

The international symposium devoted to the treasures of her collection will take place in 2025, firstly at the Fondation Royaumont, from June 13 to 15, and on August 22 at the Fondation Les Arts Florissants, in Thiré, Vendée.
