Jean-Philippe Rameau:
Les Fêtes d'Hébé

This eighteenth century opera ballet was a total show. The 1739 creation celebrated the virtuosity of ballet, songs, ensemble and orchestra with its transforming decor and amorous, rather than mythological, intrigues. Rameau really displayed his genius and won a resounding triumph.
Hébé, goddess of youth, cannot bear Mount Olympus anymore and decides to sample human pleasures on the banks of the river Seine.
In her honour, Love organises three performances, each showcasing the power of youth over hearts when combined with « lyrical talent » – poetry, music or dance. Sapho, Iphise and Eglé are the heroines of these sung and danced scenes.

Iconic figure of the Opéra-Comique since Atys came as a revelation in 1987 under the stage direction of Jean-Marie Villégier, William Christie is back with Les Arts Florissants on the occasion his 80th birthday. Robert Carsen joins him to celebrate the arts’ endless ability to regenerate love and boost youthfulness.
