A leading specialist in madrigals and sacred music, Paul Agnew leads the vocal ensemble Les Arts Florissants on an exploration of the sacred vocal repertoire across 17th- and 18th-century Baroque Europe. Starting with the Italians Claudio Monteverdi and Carlo Gesualdo, moving on to William Byrd's England, Fernando de las Infantas' Spain and Orlando de Lassus' France, the program also draws inspiration from musical traditions rooted in plainchant and cantus firmus, highlighting the historical links between the European sacred repertoire and the spiritual heritage of Jerusalem.
This program was designed in dialogue with the Frick Museum's special exhibition “To the Holy Sepulcher: Treasures from the Terra Sancta Museum.”
