A dive into Purcell's sacred music, under the inspired conduction of Paul Agnew...
Fascinated by the music of his compatriot, the British conductor has selected for this concert some sacred arias highlighting the voice. An instrument of choice for the man who took his first steps with Les Arts Florissants as a singer... in a program that highlights the richness of the Les Arts Florissants choir!
« Our program will guide the audience through the splendors of Purcell's sacred music, from the intimacy of the song for solo voice ("Lord, what is man, lost man?") to the voluptuous sonorities of the anthem "My heart is inditing"; from the humor of "Rejoice in the Lord alway" (nicknamed the "anthem of the bells") to the pathos of "Hear my prayer, O Lord", that cry for mercy expressed in an infinite crescendo. The fact that Purcell's life was cut short too early confers yet another depth to this sublime religious music. » Paul Agnew
