In tribute to Elisabeth Matiffa

August 10 2022

It is with great sadness that William Christie and Les Arts Florissants have learned of the death of violist Elisabeth Matiffa, one of the founders of the ensemble Les Arts Florissants.

The daughter of a pastor, a mathematics graduate and a first prize winner at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Elisabeth Matiffa began to work on the viola da gamba with Jean-Claude Malgoire before joining Les Arts Florissants at their creation. She remained with the ensemble for many years, participating in numerous concerts and recordings, such as Lully's Atys, for which she was continuo conductor. She also contributed greatly to musicological research and to the compilation of scores for the library of Les Arts Florissants. A Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, she remained close to the ensemble and still regularly attended its concerts.

William Christie and Les Arts Florissants have lost a great friend.
