As the year 2025 draws to a close, William Christie and the musicians of Les Arts Florissants pay tribute to English music in one of the British capital's most iconic concert halls: London's Wigmore Hall!
Henry Purcell, John Blow, Matthew Locke, John Dowland, George Frideric Handel... all these major composers of English Baroque music also have another thing in common: their association with the Chapel Royal of England. An ensemble of singers directly attached to the crown, this institution has been emblematic of the musical life of the English monarchy since the Middle Ages.
Combining opera excerpts and melodies, this program features a selection of the most beautiful arias written in the Chapel Royal environment at the height of its popularity, between the late 16th and mid-18th centuries. To perform them, William Christie wanted to surround himself with an intimate instrumental ensemble and two exceptional young British singers, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Leggett and countertenor Hugh Cutting, both winners of Le Jardin des Voix, Les Arts Florissants' academy for young Baroque singers.
What a wonderful way to end the year!
