In this first candlelit concert of the Festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie 2025, Paul Agnew devotes his program to a lesser-known composer at the frontier between Renaissance and Baroque: Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630).
A contemporary and friend of Heinrich Schütz, Schein was the first German composer to be inspired by new developments in Italian music at the dawn of the 17th century. He was also a poet, and his sense of language is particularly evident in his collection of motets Israelis Brünnlein ("The Fountain of Israel"), published in 1623, in which he expresses the prosody of the German text in a style inspired by the Italian madrigal.
Paul Agnew, a master of madrigal art and the rediscovery of repertoires from the early Baroque period, now turns his attention for the first time to this key composer in European musical history.
A discovery not to be missed!
Following the candlelight concerts: "Meditations at the Dawn of Night"
Short concerts of sacred repertoire by candlelight, the Meditations at the Dawn of Night close each day of the Festival in a contemplative atmosphere, without applause from the audience.
Accessible only to holders of a Candlelight Concert ticket (included in the ticket).
