A Tribute to Harvey Lichtenstein

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Harvey Lichtenstein. A true lover of the arts, Harvey directed the Brooklyn Academy of Music for over thirty years and left his mark on the American cultural scene by the new life he brought to that institution. He also played a vital role in bringing William Christie and Les Arts Florissants to New York audiences by allowing numerous productions – such as Atys, Médée, King Arthur, Hippolyte et Aricie, Orlando and more recently David et Jonathas and Les Fêtes vénitiennes – to be presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

In an interview with the New York Times, William Christie hailed this visionary’s pioneering spirit: “The memory of him right now comes at a time when one needs the memory of people, especially Americans, who could actually find themselves in other cultures. He had a sense of world culture.”

In sympathy with his family and friends, we salute this man of talent and of heart who meant so much to Les Arts Florissants and to the art world.
