The Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes to remount the “Barockissimo” exhibition

June 1 2017

The Barokissimo exhibition, presented last year at the Centre National du Costume de Scène in Moulins, returns in smaller format at the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes as part of the town’s festival, May 31 to September 3, 2017.

The stage costume is an integral part of the overall aesthetic vision of a work, on par with its staging or the conductor’s interpretation. “Barockissimo”, which retraces the rich history of Les Arts Florissants through the costumes of its most iconic productions, made a splash when it opened at the Centre National du Costume de Scène. Its success convinced the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes to remount this exhibition within its walls during the town’s summer festival.

In order to translate the spirit of “Barockissimo” into a smaller format, the exhibition’s two curators, Martine Kahane and Catherine Massip, present a selection of costumes from two productions: Il Sant’Alessio by Stefano Landi and Rameau, maître à danser. Created by costume designer Alain Blanchot, these costumes will take visitors into the world of these two performances, emblematic of the Baroque aesthetic and the “Arts Flo” spirit.

Loyal participants at the Saintes Festival, Les Arts Florissants will present Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Chants joyeux du temps de Pâques on July 17th and William Christie will conduct the Abbey's Youth Orchestra on July 21st.
