Homage to Betsy Jolas
Ensemble
Musicians of Les Arts Florissants, Orchestre de Paris and Ensemble intercontemporain
French-American composer Betsy Jolas has paid so many tributes to her elders through her works that it is only fair to honor her in turn. And this is what the musicians of three ensembles in residence at the Philharmonie de Paris are doing.
"My musical thinking," says Betsy Jolas, "is fueled by my daily life experience and needs to constantly refer to a double lineage, on the one hand, my own production, and on the other hand, a good part of the history of music considered through my tastes and my sensibility. Thus, for the bicentenary of Haydn's death in 2009, she composed an eloquent Ah! Haydn, and then, in ÔLAla, brings together a quartet "of today" (flute, violin, cello, piano) tuned at 440Hz and one "of yesterday" (traverso, baroque violin, viola da gamba, harpsichord) at 415Hz... As for Webern, she has never hidden her fascination for the Viennese composer, whose discovery gave her the effect of a "very soft shock".
