Underlining the Ensemble’s mission to publish early music, this concert is the second chapter in a series accompanying the publication of a three-volume set of Lambert’s 1, 2, 3 and 4 part Airs by Éditions des Abbesses for the “Les Arts Florissants” collection, directed by William Christie. Following on from the first chapter, William Christie again adopts a concert format where the airs follow an imaginary narrative line enhanced by minimalist staging.
Whereas the first chapter told the story of a marriage, the second chapter portrays a troupe of actors at work. Composed around the central theme of “Amor vince ogni cosa” (Love triumphs over all), this mise en abyme includes a section in Italian with Charpentier’s Pastoraletta H. 492, the piece being rehearsed, and a section in French with airs by Lambert, Moulinié, Charpentier and Le Camus, portraying the petty intrigues of the members of the troupe.
Under the spell of these singers who both act and direct—most of them are from the Jardin des Voix, the Academy for young singers created by Les Arts Florissants—William Christie has fun as he sits at the harpsichord and, for our added pleasure, does not hesitate to join in the action.
